Hebrew

HebrewBackground and status

The Hebrew language is spoken by the majority of people in Israel, amounting to around seven million people in this country alone.  In Israel, as in the religion of Judaism, Hebrew is an official language. There are around 9,000,000 speakers of Hebrew over the world, though only around two thirds of these speakers have Hebrew as their first language.

Culturally and historically, Hebrew is considered to be the language of Jewish people.  It is used in many Jewish rituals, and often words spoken by English-speaking Jewish people will use the Classical Hebrew words instead of the English ones.  It is considered to be a way in which the diasporic Jewish people have a strong bond with each other and maintain a strong sense of identity.

Growth and usage

The revival of the Hebrew language was a process that took place in Europe and Palestine toward the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century, through which the language's usage changed from the sacred language of Judaism to a spoken and written language used for daily life in Israel. The process began as Jews started arriving in Palestine in the first half of the nineteenth century and used Hebrew as a lingua franca.

It is important to note that non-Jews in Israel, especially the Arab minority, have considerably absorbed Hebrew.  Sixty percent or more are able to use Hebrew in their professions.  As paradoxical as it may sound at the present moment, Hebrew is often preferred to Arabic because Arabic suffers from a number of severe problems: division into dialects and a lack of textbooks and a standard literary language. Many Israeli-Arabs prefer textbooks in Hebrew.

Hebrew provides a significant edge in the work place, particularly if your business has ties to a Jewish or Hebrew speaking firm. Whether you need it for business, for personal use or for academic purposes, getting your message across is vital. With international commerce at an all time high in Israel, there is a high importance on getting a valid translated text. In the fields of medicine and industry mistakes can be costly, that’s why Language Inc., a South Africa based company, offers a full range of Hebrew translation, editing, proofreading and copywriting services.
